This book, written and edited by leading experts from around the world, looks critically at how culture impacts on the way posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related disorders are diagnosed and treated. There have been important advances in clinical treatment and research on PTSD, partly as a result of researchers and clinicians increasingly taking into account how “culture matters.” For mental health professionals who strive to respond to the needs of people from diverse cultures who have experienced traumatic events, this book is invaluable. It presents recent research and practical approaches on key topics, including: How culture shapes mental health and recovery, how to integrate culture and context into PTSD theory, how trauma-related distress is experienced and expressed in different cultures, reflecting local values, idioms, and metaphors and how to integrate cultural dimensions into psychological interventions. Providing new theoretical insights as well as practical advice, it will be of interest to clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and other health professionals, as well as researchers and students engaged with mental health issues, both globally and locally.

I hated reading this book. I can't remember feeling so tortured by reading in my life. After 3 attempts in a week I am on page 6. I do have 2 masters degrees, so I am pretty sure I am literate. Trying to read this book makes me doubt that as each sentence is overly repetitive dry, abstract and uninteresting, even though the subject matter should be fascinating! It was easier to read a scientific paper on the properties of glycerine this morning. Dear author, Whatever you are trying to say, good god, you did not nail it. You tried to pack too much into every single sentence, and missed conveying very much. Some of the articles are less dry and better written, but nothing really well written. Save your money. ( i will give you my copy!) I bought this for a continuing education class, but will now skim for answers and not care about my grade. I was so interested to learn, but this book has severely curtailed my interest in the matters at hand. Literally makes me feel sick and as it is so unfriendly to the human mind to attempt to read this thing. I guess the author was more concerned that you should know how intelligent they are rather than that you might enjoy and learn! Spare yourself, do not buy this book. The type is terrible even with my best reading glasses.
